There was a wait at Maclaren's on Elgin, and in the end, we didn't end up playing even when a table finally opened up. We decided to go to Byward Market instead.

Old Building at Queen and Elgin. I wanted to get a long exposure shot of the street, so I did. I had to get down on the pavement to compose this shot. I don't recommend doing it.

The next day, I was feeling a little down so I decided to go for a walk. The snow had just begun to melt so the trail conditions were less than ideal. Consequently, my socks were soaked and my boots were covered in mud by the time I got back from trekking.

This was taken underneath the Transiyway bridge between Lees Station and Hurdman Station. The water levels were very high and I was standing on a thin layer of ice. It was hard to get a stabilized shot even on my tripod as it was moving around everywhere.

On the map I saw a bridge going across the river so I thought I'd give it a try to get a good view of Rideau River. The bridge ran parallel to 417 which is also a part of Trans-Canada Highway. I was originally going to go across the bridge and walk to Lees Station to catch the bus home, but I was getting cold and wet, so I decided to walk back to Hurdman Station.

View of Rideau River

Back to Hurdman

Versefest

Last Friday, I had a chance to check out Ottawa's annual Versefest (http://versefest.ca/). I had actually heard about it from other co-ops at work when we went to Jacques Cartier Park during lunch when it was closed. At the time it seemed really lame, but I came upon a blog entry on Apt613 (http://apt613.ca/) and thought it might be a cool thing to check out. Luckily my roommate Jonathan has been to a Poetry Slam before and he enlightened me of its awesomeness.

Shawarma Poutine at Shawarma Byte on Osgoode Street in Sandy Hill

After work on Friday Jonathan and I went to Rideau Centre then went to Ottawa Arts Court to pick up the tickets for the show. We then decided to get poutine from a different place from the one we usually go to. For me personally, it lacked the wholesomeness of poutine as it just tasted like fries, chicken, lukewarm gravy and unmelted cheese curds.

We went home, got changed, and I grabbed my 50mm lens for the event. Just before I entered the theatre, I realized that I somehow managed to lose my ticket even though it was in my coat pocket on the bus ride to the venue. But I managed to get in because people working at the theatre seemed very trusting. The guy in the picture above gave the event a kick start it deserved (The theatre was so full that some people were already sitting on the floor!). He was not one of the contestants though.

I don't remember much from the night because I was too busy taking pictures. Sometimes it's so easy to get taken up by shutterbug inside of me. Out of 12 contestants, these 4 men were most memorable of them all. They were clever, funny, insightful, and eloquent. Because I am not very good with words in any way, I was just blown away by how articulate they were in delivering their thoughts in words in front of a large crowd. Sure, they must have had practice before coming on stage, but to convey their thoughts in such convincing and poetic way must have been difficult. It seemed like everyone on stage was performing truly from their hearts.

Life in Ottawa

It has been just over two months since I moved to Ottawa for work. I didn't think I would enjoy the cold winter too much, but the weather has been surprisingly mild in my standards, and there are a lot of things to do in Ottawa as opposed to St. Catharines or Waterloo which are all located in Southwestern Ontario. One thing I've done a lot this Winter is skating. I've never actually owned a pair of skates until this year, so I didn't know how good I'd be at it. I did heavily rollerblade when I was younger so I was familiar with the concept of pushing myself forward. But on ice, there is significantly less chance of falling and injuring yourself, so I went full out on the ice whenever I had the chance. Because I didn't have to wear rental skates that were always a size too big, I was much more comfortable without having my ankles painfully collapse inwards especially with my axillary naviculars.

Rideau Canal

Unfortunately Spring (more like somewhere between Winter and Spring) came so the canal had to be shut down because maintenance would be too much work for little gain to be had. But compared to most people, I think I skated enough to make my Ottawa life worthwhile. I just have to find something else to do now that the canal is closed.

I am back.

After being absent from blogsphere for almost a year (well I've been to Tumblr, Wordpress, Naver, Cyworld, Paran, and something else I can't remember at the moment). I have been active in Korean blogsphere for a while I was in Korea, but since school started everything all ceased except for Facebook. Since I'm in a new city and this is a new year and I have met a lot of new people (quite possibly more than I was expecting to meet this year), I thought I'd post again. I'm not going to link images to my Flickr account because I don't have a pro account and I have hit my 200 photo limit, so some of the older things might get hidden soon if I keep posting my photos on there.

A friend reminded me that it was Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. I'm challenging myself to not get tempted into buying any photography-related products. At the same time I'm challenging myself to take a photo-a-day until the day before Easter Sunday to challenge myself to develop my photography skills.

This was just taken on the porch because it was snowing hard last night (March 9th). I think the weather shown in this photo well sums up the winter in Ottawa although I believe this has been a very mild winter. Thanks to the nasty system that swept through Ottawa which brought wet ice followed by rain, tomorrow's (Friday) commute will be bad even though today's (Thursday) commute was pretty nasty in slush.

This is the photo taken today (March 10) at Byward Market. I had some time to kill before meeting up with a couple friends to grab dinner, so I quickly went to the bank to get some cash and went to a store I've been wanting to go for the past week. It was nice, but it was nothing too exciting. I came out empty-handed.

Although my re-employment for next term has not officially been confirmed yet, I'd like to think it is as positivity will bring change. When I do work here in the summer, I will be living really close to downtown (again, haven't heard back from the subletter, but I'd like to think that she's been in contact with my future roommate), and I will be exploring more places in Byward Market for eateries and nightlife. I'm not really big on club scene, but there isn't really much to do in Ottawa now that Rideau Canal is closed. Canal is a whole different story which I shall save for a later time.

This is what I had for dinner today at Richtree. It was going under a rennovation so only takeouts were available. Shepard's pie was good but I'd definitely want to come back and try it on actual plate while it's still steamy hot. I need to get at least 5 hours of sleep! Good night.

Lights comes to UW!

UW , originally uploaded by hjkimbrian.

Canadian sweetheart singer-songwriter LIGHTS came to UW. I've been meaning to purchase one from Katz Eye Optics since the beginning of the year, but I decided try out a product from a seller on eBay. I would have liked this before Canada Day, but it arrived a little bit later.

I had a little trouble putting this back in because I messed up. After getting it dirty and scratched (I think), I managed to put it in with acceptable cleanness. I know how to focus using the screen, but because I've never done it before, there is a slight learning process which I will hopefully overcome very soon. Although I don't think the quality of the screen is very great (might be because of my poor installation skills), it is still very usable and seems accurate so far. It believe that it affected metering very little, or none at all. At the end of the day, I think it was well worth my $30.

Rain

After the past week's heat wave, it has been raining for quite a while. Down to tower'd Camelot:
And by the moon the reaper weary,
Piling sheaves in uplands airy,
Listening, whispers " 'Tis the fairy
Lady of Shalott."

PART II

There she weaves by night and day
A magic web with colours gay.
She has heard a whisper say,
A curse is on her if she stay
To look down to Camelot.
She knows not what the curse may be,
And so she weaveth steadily,
And little other care hath she,
The Lady of Shalott.

And moving thro' a mirror clear
That hangs before her all the year,
Shadows of the world appear.
There she sees the highway near
Winding down to Camelot:
There the river eddy whirls,
And there the surly village-churls,
And the red cloaks of market girls,
Pass onward from Shalott.

Sometimes a troop of damsels glad,
An abbot on an ambling pad,
Sometimes a curly shepherd-lad,
Or long-hair'd page in crimson clad,
Goes by to tower'd Camelot;
And sometimes thro' the mirror blue
The knights come riding two and two:
She hath no loyal knight and true,
The Lady of Shalott.

But in her web she still delights
To weave the mirror's magic sights,
For often thro' the silent nights
A funeral, with plumes and lights
And music, went to Camelot:
Or when the moon was overhead,
Came two young lovers lately wed:
"I am half sick of shadows," said
The Lady of Shalott.

PART III

A bow-shot from her bower-eaves,
He rode between the barley-sheaves,
The sun came dazzling thro' the leaves,
And flamed upon the brazen greaves
Of bold Sir Lancelot.
A red-cross knight for ever kneel'd
To a lady in his shield,
That sparkled on the yellow field,
Beside remote Shalott.

The gemmy bridle glitter'd free,
Like to some branch of stars we see
Hung in the golden Galaxy.
The bridle bells rang merrily
As he rode down to Camelot:
And from his blazon'd baldric slung
A mighty silver bugle hung,
And as he rode his armour rung,
Beside remote Shalott.

All in the blue unclouded weather
Thick-jewell'd shone the saddle-leather,
The helmet and the helmet-feather
Burn'd like one burning flame together,
As he rode down to Camelot.
As often thro' the purple night,
Below the starry clusters bright,
Some bearded meteor, trailing light,
Moves over still Shalott.

His broad clear brow in sunlight glow'd;
On burnish'd hooves his war-horse trode;
From underneath his helmet flow'd
His coal-black curls as on he rode,
As he rode down to Camelot.
From the bank and from the river
He flash'd into the crystal mirror,
"Tirra lirra," by the river
Sang Sir Lancelot.

She left the web, she left the loom,
She made three paces thro' the room,
She saw the water-lily bloom,
She saw the helmet and the plume,
She look'd down to Camelot.
Out flew the web and floated wide;
The mirror crack'd from side to side;
"The curse is come upon me," cried
The Lady of Shalott.

PART IV

In the stormy east-wind straining,
The pale yellow woods were waning,
The broad stream in his banks complaining,
Heavily the low sky raining
Over tower'd Camelot;
Down she came and found a boat
Beneath a willow left afloat,
And round about the prow she wrote
The Lady of Shalott.

And down the river's dim expanse
Like some bold seër in a trance,
Seeing all his own mischance--
With a glassy countenance
Did she look to Camelot.
And at the closing of the day
She loosed the chain, and down she lay;
The broad stream bore her far away,
The Lady of Shalott.

Lying, robed in snowy white
That loosely flew to left and right--
The leaves upon her falling light--
Thro' the noises of the night
She floated down to Camelot:
And as the boat-head wound along
The willowy hills and fields among,
They heard her singing her last song,
The Lady of Shalott.

Heard a carol, mournful, holy,
Chanted loudly, chanted lowly,
Till her blood was frozen slowly,
And her eyes were darken'd wholly,
Turn'd to tower'd Camelot.
For ere she reach'd upon the tide
The first house by the water-side,
Singing in her song she died,
The Lady of Shalott.

Under tower and balcony,
By garden-wall and gallery,
A gleaming shape she floated by,
Dead-pale between the houses high,
Silent into Camelot.
Out upon the wharfs they came,
Knight and burgher, lord and dame,
And round the prow they read her name,
The Lady of Shalott.

Who is this? and what is here?
And in the lighted palace near
Died the sound of royal cheer;
And they cross'd themselves for fear,
All the knights at Camelot:
But Lancelot mused a little space;
He said, "She has a lovely face;
God in his mercy lend her grace,
The Lady of Shalott."

Leave out all the rest.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; You don't mind pulling things out of your ass, but you don't want to think and you don't want to work too hard. You also apparently don't want a job, unless you're Clarice Starling...who got all the way to the FBI. Sure, so all those intro lectures and projects where you make your roommate look at a list of color names (printed in different colors than what the names suggest! omg!) might be dull, but after that you get to do cooler stuff, like, uh...I'll get back to you on that. Your powerful skills of insight into other people suggest maybe you should write more quizzes for this site when you're not doing that time intensive, uh, whatever it is you psych kids do.

Link: <a href="'http://www.okcupid.com/tests/take?testid="16597262513340959511'">The What Should You Major In? But when I arrived there, I was told that registers close at 4 A.M. everyday for about ten minutes. Disappointed, I was about to head back to residence, but I realized that I could see the stars so much better on the Village 1 Green.

I had been planning to look at the stars from the V1 Green for this entire year, but I had not done so before because I simply did not have anyone to go with. But because it was my last night in Waterloo, I decided to do what I have always wanted to do.

I was captivated by the beauty of the stars, and did not realize that time had passed by. As I was connecting dots in the sky with my laser pointer, I noticed other people's presence behind a bush.

As selfish as it may sound, I was not happy with others' presence because I was having an intimate time with the Creator in what I'd like to call a sanctuary (it had become so that fast). And they had disturbed that for whatever it was they were doing in the woods at 4:00 A.M.

2 Corinthians 13:5-9
Test yourselves to make sure you are solid in the faith. Don't drift along taking everything for granted. Give yourselves regular checkups. You need firsthand evidence, not mere hearsay, that Jesus Christ is in you. Test it out. If you fail the test, do something about it. I hope the test won't show that we have failed. But if it comes to that, we'd rather the test showed our failure than yours. We're rooting for the truth to win out in you. We couldn't possibly do otherwise.

Substance Abuse

Why do people drink? From my point of view, some drink to get wasted, others drink for the taste. (Note: I tried to rhyme the words here, but I failed.) I do not know how it feels to be wasted, so I would not make many comments on that, but why do things that can be potentially hazardous to your body? The feeling of being buzzed may liberate one from the worries and concerns, but biologically, it is only the effects of one's brain cells being damaged from the abuse.

I don't see a point in risking one's intelligence for a moment, a night's fun. When someone drinks to get wasted, lights up a joint to get high, or smokes a tobacco to blow the worries away, I empathize. I feel sad when I see those happen around me.

Why do we rely on these earthly addictions? Are we not meant to live with so much more? Have we lost ourselves?

1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Don't you realize that this is not the way to live? Unjust people who don't care about God will not be joining in his kingdom. Those who use and abuse each other, use and abuse sex, use and abuse the earth and everything in it, don't qualify as citizens in God's kingdom. A number of you know from experience what I'm talking about, for not so long ago you were on that list. Since then, you've been cleaned up and given a fresh start by Jesus, our Master, our Messiah and by our God present in us, the Spirit.

Spiders

Last night, I was encountered by a spider. I was writing down the equations for my statistics course, then I saw something moving from the corner of eye. I looked over and there was a spider. If everything had gone as usual, I would have flicked it off my desk with a blunt force that would have crushed its body at the moment of impact, but I felt pity for such creature.

Why are we scared of spiders? According to Wikipedia, spiders are unlikely to bite humans because they do not perceive humans as predators. Unless of course, if pinched, spiders will bite humans, but only about 200 species have bites that can cause potential health problems in humans.

Spiders are known to wait for their prey, their patience. Maybe We all have something to learn from them.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18
So we're not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There's far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can't see now will last forever.

How sketchy am I?

I guess I am a very sketchy person. My bed's never made, and there's barely any room to step on in my room. At around 4:30 this morning, I had an urge to use the washroom. But, due to the plastic bags thrown everywhere on the floor, finding a pair of shoes was nearly impossible. So I grabbed whatever I could find and went.

Low self-maintenance is the last thing I need right now. If I keep doing what I am doing, sooner or later my self-esteem will completely drain out. Only one more week of THIS is left. Then I'll be able to have life, meet people and do something that my soul yearns for.

1 Corinthians 2:3-5
I was unsure of how to go about this, and felt totally inadequate - I was scared to death, if you want the truth of it - and so nothing I said could have impressed you or anyone else. But the Message came through anyway. God's Spirit and God's power did it, which made it clear that your life or faith is a response to God's power, not to some fancy mental or emotional footwork by me or anyone else.

Why am I here? I had to learn in the hard way when I found myself spending my Christmas sitting at home watching TV. Although the friends that I have lost may be irreplaceable, it does not mean that I did not make any new friends.

I've come to known quite a number of people since I came here in September. The very first thing that I noticed was that the people here were a lot more individualistic than the ones I knew from before. Although being individualistic is not necessarily a bad thing, when I tried to stand on my own to fit in, I found myself falling.

I have fallen, and who is there to help me up? I could not possibly ask my classmates because most of them are all busy trying to cover their own "asses" for a lack of a better word. There was no sense of unity to be found in my class. What I saw in my high school friends, I failed to find in my college ones. Was that why I was too afraid to ask for help?

I beleve it was the power of prayer that bound myself and the others together when we were in high school. I was not afraid to ask for help we were one. But what I failed to realize until now was the true source of the help that I've always had.

Help does indeed comes from God. And he will definitely help me up for I've fallen. Would my parents be gracious enough to understand my failure?

2 Corinthians 12:9-10
Three times I did that, and then he told me,

My grace is enough; it's all you need.
My strength comes into its own in your weakness.

Once I heard that, I was glad to let it happen. I quit focusing on the handicap and began appreciating the gift. It was a case of Christ's strength moving in on my weakness. Now I take limitations in stride, and with good cheer, these limitations that cut me down to size - abuse, accidents, opposition, bad breaks. I just let Christ take over! And so the weaker I get, the stronger I become.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://hjkimbrian.blogspot.com/2007/04/why-am-i-here-pt2.html' title='Why am I here? This is the question I've asked myself so many times over the last few months I've been here. I chose Waterloo for its namesake. I thought that going to the #1 University in Canada would carry me through my university career. And I was clearly mistaken. Of all the program's possible, how did I end up choosing the most difficult one the university has to offer? I like challenges, but I did not know what kind of challenge I was up against at the time of my college applications.

To see the need and meet 'em has been my motto since my revelation a few years back. I've wanted to contribute to the society because I realized that I have been taking a lot of things for granted after my visits to the less-privileged around the globe.

Being a part of nanotechnology industry seemed really appealing at the time. Because it has so many practical applications, I thought it would benefit the others the most. I thought I was going to be the one to save the world upon reception of my Bachelor's degree. But now I know that I would have a much better chance if I put on a cape and fly around the world saving people.

2 Corinthians 5: 6-8
That's why we live with such good cheer. You won't see us drooping our heads or dragging our feet! Cramped conditions here don't get us down. They only remind us of the spacious living conditions ahead. It's what we trust in but don't yet see that keeps us going. Do you suppose a few ruts in the road or rocks in the path are going to stop us? When the time comes, we'll be plenty ready to exchange exile for homecoming.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://hjkimbrian.blogspot.com/2007/04/why-am-i-here-pt1.html' title='Why am I here? I was so busy that I didn't even have time to think about it. At about midnight last night, I went to the cafeteria to get Easter egg chocolates. But is Easter really about chocolates? No. It is about God who lives. I think over the last few months I've been in Waterloo, I have pushed God away from myself. Last night, however, I needed God more than ever as I was overwhelmed by the pressure of having to write the exams.

I have not once been afraid to write exams whether prepared or not, but this time, it was very much different.

Well, I woke up this morning and did a little preparation. When I went to write the exam, I was not afraid any more. I guess I could have done a lot better on it though. Oh well. :S I guess I will have to come up with excuses for my poor academic performance really quickly.

2 Corinthians 5:1-5

For instance, we know that when these bodies of ours are taken down like tents and folded away, they will be replaced by resurrection bodies in heaven - God-made, not handmade - and we'll never have to relocate our "tents" again. Sometimes we can hardly wait to move - and so we cry out in frustration. Compared to what's coming, living conditions around here seem like a stopover in an unfurnished shack, and we're tired of it! We've been given a glimpse of the real thing, our true home, our resurrection bodies! The Spirit of God whets our appetite by giving us a taste of what's ahead. He puts a little of heaven in our hearts so that we'll never settle for less.

Thanks for your prayers, guys.
